The words of the wise are heard softly, more than the shout of a ruler of fools.

Kohelet 9:17

Origin of the name Gitberg

The family name Gitberg comes from the name of an area and it is translated from Yiddish as "good mountain". Additionally the first part of the name "git" indicates a definite origin of this name. Such pronunciation - "git" and not "gut" - is characteristic of southern-eastern dialect of Yiddish (mainly used in Moldova and Romania). For example in Lithuania and Belorussia the name Gutberg was wide spread.

It is known that in the beginning of the 20-th century some members of the clan Gitberg lived in Kiev and Riga.
