Origin of the name Shlafman

The name Shlafman or Shlyafman appeared in central regions of Ukraine. Shlyafmans lived near Berdichev in the end of the 19-th century, while Shlafmans lived near Gaisin and Hotin (closer to Moldova). The difference in the Russian spelling of these names is so insignificant that one can safely say that this is the same name. The name comes from the Yiddish "shlaf" - "puny".
