Будучи командиром в армии, воевал с Авнером бен Нером и с армией царя Саула (Шмуэль 2, 24), и также много воевал с палестинцами (Шмуэль 2, 31, 15-17), адумеями, и амонитами (Хроники 1). Сохранил верность Давиду во время восстания Авшалома и помогал в подавлении восстания Шева бен Бахри (Шмуэль 2). Давид считал его жёстким, фанатичным человеком и видел в нём преграду к заключению мира с врагами. Имя Авишая имеет непонятное значение.
