Origin of Buniver name

At the moment there are two versions on the origin of this family name.

One is brought by the famous Israeli researcher Abraham Ariel. He obtains the family name Buniver (ah) from the distorted Ben Baurch, that is son of Baruch. Ariel says that the variations in the name spelling occured in medieval Europe (in particular in France and Spain).

The second and in our view more convincing version is brought by the researcher-encyclopedist from Paris Alexander Beider in his Dictionary of Jewish names. He claims that the name Buniver came from the name of the shtetl Buniva (Bunyava) that was located in Vladimir region of Odessa area.

This family name is rare and extremely not spread. Those several families we know about are most probably close relatives according to our conjectures. One family lives in Brooklin in New York, and two others - in Saint-Petersburg.

Dear representatives of the Buniver clan

We would like to invite you to help us ressurect the history of your family, to link up the branches of your family tree and to find relatives abroad. Among Jews, due to the manner in which family names were acquired and passed down, there are relatively few people who, although unrelated, bear the same surname as one another. The majority of Jewish people who bear a certain family name can usually trace their roots back to a common ancestor about 5-6 generations back. Further, when two Jewish people bear the same surname, they are usually members of the same broader 'clan', descended of the same extended family.
