Only our concept of time makes it possible for us to speak of the Day of Judgement by that name; in reality it is a constant court in perpetual session.

Origin of Lipas name

The word "libes" or "lipes" means "pleasing, dear" in Yiddish. From this word a Yiddish female name "Liba" appeared, that in Russia transformed later in "Luba" among many Jews. Along with that, naturally there always was an independent Russian name - Luba as a short name for Lubov'. However, in Jewish families Luba most often meant the name Liba made to sound Russian. By the way from the same word "libes" or "lipes" (the sounds "p" and "b" change depending on the dialect of Yiddish) a male name "Lipa" appeared that was very wide spread in the Pale of Settlemt in the end of the 19-th century.
So the family name Lipes means nothing but "son of Liba" or "son of Lipa". Names originating from the names of wives or mothers were mainly spread in Minsk and Grodno gubernias.
By the way, the name Lipke as a dimunitive form of the name Lipa is a famous name in the American criminal world. Famous gangster of the thirties, a Russian immigrant, Leon (Lipa) Buhgalter that became famous by organizing for the first time in criminal history a whole gang or group of killers, called himself just like his mother used to - Lipke. The FBI was sure for a long time that Lipke Buhgalter is not a first and last name, but rather a nick of the famous gangster.

Dear representatives of the Lipas clan

We would like to invite you to help us ressurect the history of your family, to link up the branches of your family tree and to find relatives abroad. Among Jews, due to the manner in which family names were acquired and passed down, there are relatively few people who, although unrelated, bear the same surname as one another. The majority of Jewish people who bear a certain family name can usually trace their roots back to a common ancestor about 5-6 generations back. Further, when two Jewish people bear the same surname, they are usually members of the same broader 'clan', descended of the same extended family.
