Origin of the name Gershoig

The family name Gershoig belong to the type of "decorative" family names. The name is formed by the Yiddish words "hirsch" ("deer") and "oyg" ("eye") and it is translated as "deer's eye".

The name Gershoig in the beginning of the 19-th century occurs in towns of Berdichev and Radomyshl (Radomysl) in Ukraine. In Radomyshl members of the family owned a leather factory. The family also resided in Riga.
