Sándor Gombos - Biography

Dr. Sándor Gombos (December 4, 1895, in Sombor, Serbia – January 27, 1968, in Budapest, Hungary) was a Hungarian fencer.

Fencing career

Hungarian Championship

Gombos the Hungarian sabre champion in 1930.

World Championships

Gombos was World Champion, winning gold medals in individual sabre at the 1926 and 1927 European Championships,[1] and gold medals in Team Sabre at the 1930 and 1931 European Championships.

The European Championships were predecessor to the World Championships, first held in 1937.

Olympics

He won a gold medal in Team Sabre at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, in which the Hungarian team went undefeated.

In the individual competition, Gombos reached the finals but did not medal. After winning 8 of his 11 bouts, he finished in 5th place.

Miscellaneous

Gombos fought a duel in 1937 with a fencing instructor, which was reported in the Hungarian press.[2]

Hall of Fame

Gombos, who was Jewish, was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.[3]
