Choosing the Right X52 Pipe Suppliers for Your Oil & Gas Project

Choosing a supplier for a critical pipeline can be just as vital as determining the pipe grade. Whether it is a cross-country gas pipeline or an offshore oil system, having the correct specs from the start is crucial in avoiding costly and time-consuming issues later.

Any pipeline will typically consist of a large majority of API 5L. When it comes to procurement, the most frequent grades discussed will be X42 and X52. Knowing the grades and what to expect from X52 pipe suppliers can mean the difference between the success of a project and a costly disruption.

What’s the Difference Between X42 and X52?

Both grades fall under API 5L and function the same way, transporting oil, gas, and water under pressure. The primary difference is in the grades’ respective strengths and pressures.

X42 is ideal for use in moderate pressure applications and is commonly used in water and lower-pressure gas distribution lines. For higher pressure applications and long distance gas transportation, X52 would be the more appropriate choice.

Ultimately, the decision will be based on the design pressure and the applicable code for wall thickness.

Finding Quality X52 Pipe Suppliers

Finding the right X52 Pipe Suppliers is difficult, and cost is only a small portion of the equation. Here's what procurement engineers and project managers actually look at when placing orders:

MTCs and Traceability
Pipes sourced without MTCs that are certified with EN 10204 3.1 are a risk. At minimum the supplier should provide traceability to the mill for the chemical and mechanical properties of the batch as well as the heat number. Suppliers of X52 pipes provide these documents before they are requested.

Pipe Specification Level (PSL)
Suppliers should be able to provide the level of PSL requested. PSL2 involves additional controls of the chemistry as well as toughness testing and requires more elaborate inspections. In sour service or offshore environments, PSL2 is often a requirement.

Pipe Type and Route of Manufacture
Pipes designated as X52 can be provided in the following:

Seamless - for high pressure and smaller diameter pipes
ERW- lower cost for more standard service
LSAW/DSAW - for large diameter pipes
SSAW (Spiral) - for low to medium service gas and water lines
A quality supplier is able to stock a number of manufacturing types and, based on the projects NPS, time constraints, and service requirements, advise the best type to used for the project.

Approvals of a Third Party
Suppliers with approvals of a third party inspection body such as BV or Lloyd's are of interest. In addition, approvals from national oil companies and downstream operators such as KNPC, GASCO, or Qatar Gas show that the supplier has met the needed industry grade procurement requirements.

Value-Added Services and Coating
Longer pipelines generally require a coating of either 3LPE, FBE, or coal tar. Leading suppliers of X52 pipes provide either in-house coating services or manage coating services in coordination with the supplier.

Why Sourcing from India Makes Sense

India’s rapidly growing economy has made it a valuable center for competitive API 5L line pipe supply. Companies like Tycoon Piping Solution based out of Mumbai supply X42 and X52 grades and operate some of the top mills like ISMT, JSL, and other companies like Maharashtra Seamless, Tenaris, and JFE Japan. They process exports to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
