Danny Newman, the legendary director of press and public relations at Lyric Opera of Chicago whose genius transformed the art of arts marketing, died of pulmonary fibrosis Dec. 1 at his home in Lincolnwood. He was 88. During his 42 seasons with Lyric Opera, Newman not only helped boost its growing international reputation, he revolutionized the way nonprofit arts groups build their audiences—most of all through subscription ticket sales. “Danny was one of the godfathers, if not the godfather, of Lyric Opera,” said William Mason, the company’s general director. “He was one of the greatest arts patrons of the last half-century. What he did to help theater companies, symphonies, ballets and opera companies across the U.S. and Canada build a sound financial base was incalculable.” “Subscribe Now!,” Newman’s 1977 book, now used in some 31 countries, has been adopted as a textbook in many graduate schools of arts management. Newman’s dynamic life of many roles began when he was born in 1919 on Chicago’s West Side, the son of Jacob Newman, a wholesale tobacconist. He grew up in Rogers Park where he honed his selling and press agent skills at a young age—selling subscriptions door to door, acting as press agent to vaudeville acts ranging from lion tamers to strippers. During World War II he served in the Army at the Battle of the Bulge, was wounded twice and won the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and five battle stars. After returning to Chicago, when he was the press agent for the American Yiddish Art Theatre’s production of “Shylock and His Daughter,” Newman met his first wife, Dina Halpern, a former star of the Warsaw Yiddish Art Theatre, who was playing the role of Portia. Married in 1948, they shared their busy careers and travels until her death in 1989. It was also at the Yiddish Theatre, while performing in its production of “Anna Lucasta,” that Maynard Wishner, a past chairman of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation board, first met and befriended Newman. Throughout the years, Newman was very close to the Jewish community, a constant presence at Jewish events, commemorations and synagogues, according to Wishner. “His Jewishness was central to him,” said Wishner. Among his countless enterprises, Newman was executive producer for the Chicago Yiddish Theatre Association, owned movie houses, promoted drive-in movie theaters and high school football games, and co-produced the radio program “Famous Names,” hosted by Mike Wallace. Some of his most influential work was done as a consultant for the Ford Foundation and the Theater Communications Group, promoting subscription campaigns at more than 500 arts organizations around the world. Among his many honors, Newman received a knighthood from the Italian government, was named “Arts Angel” by a consortium of 150 Boston arts organizations, and held honorary degrees from DePaul and Roosevelt Universities in Chicago. In 2006, “Tales of a Theatrical Guru,” Newman’s book of profiles of famous people he had known, was published by the University of Illinois Press. When he turned 88, last Jan. 24, Lyric Opera named its box office for him, with “Subscribe Now!” inscribed on the box-office wall. In addition to his wife, Alyce Katz Newman, whom he married in 1994, Newman is survived by stepsons Paul Andre Katz and Lenoard Katz of Lincolnwood.
