Gerald Stone - Biography

Gerald Louis Stone is an American-born Australian television and radio journalist, television executive and author.

Early years

Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Stone graduated in political science from Cornell University and in 1957 started work as a copy boy for the New York Times.

In 1962 he emigrated to Australia.

Journalism

Newspaper work

Stone reported for News Limited in Vietnam in the late 1960s, and also covered the Australian Moree "Freedom Rides" for the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror.

Editor of the Bulletin

Stone was editor-in-chief of the Bulletin from 1995-1998.

Television

This Day Tonight

He first appeared on This Day Tonight in 1967.

News director for the Nine network

By 1975 Stone was news director for the Nine Network.

A 10 May 2007 newspaper report in the Daily Telegraph stated that in August 1975 Stone

... went to Dili with Kerry Packer and cameraman Brian Peters, one of those later killed.
Mr Stone said he and Mr Peters came under fire and Nine boss Mr Packer's voice could be heard on tape shouting: 'Come back.'

Sixty Minutes

He was the first executive producer of the successful Australian version of "60 Minutes", which made television stars of Ray Martin, Jana Wendt and George Negus.

Fox

Stone served as head of current affairs for Rupert Murdoch's Fox Network in New York.

Channel 7

He returned to Australia to take up the position of network head of current affairs for Channel 7.

SBS deputy chairman

Stone was appointed a deputy chairman of SBS.

Personal life

Stone lives on Sydney's lower North Shore.
