Origin of Stambler name

Probably, the surname Stambler is a modification of the surname Stamler.

Stamler is a typical surname which could be given to Jews only in Galicia. In quest of easy money Galician officials imposed a special price list according to which there were expensive surnames, associated with the names of precious metals and flowers, such as Goldberg (golden mountain), Goldstein (golden stone), Rosental (rose valley). The more simple surnames were less expensive, for example, Aisen (metal), Stahl (steel).

Those who didn’t want or couldn’t pay received humiliating surnames, such as Stinker (skunk), Levenfish (lion fish), Taschengreifer (pickpocket), Lagenstrick (gibbet rope), Eselkopf (ass head). Such surnames could be also given to the Jews who kept themselves defiantly and didn’t want to be humiliated by Austrian authorities.

The surname Stamler in German means stammerer. It could be assumed that the one who received it had annoyed Austrian officials hard. A word by word translation in such a case cannot tell us much about qualities of nature of the surname owner. But we could be sure that he was a man of principal, who was able to have his own way.

The surname Stambler was found at city of Kamenetz Podolsky in Ukraina, Vitebsk area in Belarus and at Bialystok area of Poland.
