Один из выдающихся законодателей и учителей своего поколения. Сначала был раввином в итальянском городе Люка, затем эмигрировал в Германию, где был раввином и судьёй ("ав бейт дин") Аугсбурга, Вюрцбурга, Майнца и, наконец, Нюрнберга. Пользовался большим почётом, император Фридрих дал Якову титул "гохтемейстера". Однако, это не помогло, когда в 1499 году начались гонения евреев и в возрасте 109 лет раввин Яков был вынужден покинуть Нюрнберг, поселившись в Регенсбурге.
