Josh Bornstein - Biography

Josh Bornstein is an Australian Lawyer. He is the son of former ALP State MP David Bornstein. Josh is a Principal at Maurice Blackburn (law firm) where he heads the national Employment & Industrial Law practice.

He was played by Justin Smith in the ABC miniseries Bastard Boys, about the 1998 Australian waterfront dispute.

Cases in which Bornstein has been involved

  • Representing the Australian Workers' Union and Larry Knight's family over the Beaconsfield mine collapse
  • Representing Australian Council of Trade Unions and Ansett Australia employees over the insolvency of the company
  • Assisting the Maritime Union of Australia defeat Patrick Stevedores in the High Court (see also 1998 Australian waterfront dispute)
  • Representing the Wilderness Society over Gunns Limited

Appointments

Josh is a member of the Board of Per Capita, the Advisory Board of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law, University of Melbourne and the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board.

Between 2003-2005, he was Chairman of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Law Institute of Victoria. In 2007 he was the Chair of its Workplace Relations Section and is now an Executive member of the Section.

Josh is also a member of the editorial committee of the Australian Journal of Labour Law and a regular contributor to the Australian Master Workplace Relations Guide, now in its 3rd edition.
