Background and Education

Klein was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, the son of a Jewish Orthodox rabbi, and raised in Michigan and North Miami, Florida. He graduated from North Miami Sr. High in 1963, obtained a BA in biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, and his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1971. He worked as a medical intern at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and as a resident in dermatology at the university hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California at Los Angeles, where he worked as Chief Resident in Dermatology in 1975.

Career

Dr. Arnold Klein is considered the father of modern cosmetic dermatology and has been in the forefront of the latest treatments in this field. He developed the gold standard for minimally invasive injection techniques for physical enhancements such as Botox, Collagen and Restylane. These techniques are used worldwide by dermatologist and plastic surgeons. In 1984, Klein developed lip augmentation which to date, is the largest filler procedure used worldwide. Developing the injection techniques for Bovine collagen for wrinkles and scars helped get FDA approval and launched the highly profitable field of minimally invasive aesthetic enhancements. This discovery enabled him to speak internationally and led to his work as an advisor, consultant, and/or principal investigator for Allergan, Anike, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Ethicon, Genzyme, Johnson & Johnson, Medicis Aesthetics, Ortho-Neutrogena, Skin Medica and Q-Med. For this work he received multiple awards including, the first annual Allergan Award for Aesthetic Achievements, Allergan Award for Pioneering Work in Soft Tissue Augmentation and the American Dermatologic Association Honor Society.

Klein is an outspoken critic of the misuse of prescription drugs, and of certain synthetic dermal fillers, including ArteFill. Dr. Klein was responsible for the FDA giving Allergan's Botox a black box warning. In 2010, Klein was named a consultant to the FDA.

He estimated in 2002 that he had administered Botox injections to 90,000 people, including Carrie Fisher, Cher, Elizabeth Taylor and Dolly Parton. "Dr. Arnold Klein is acknowledged worldwide as the best! All doctors I know say the same." - Angelika Taschen, Editor of Aesthetic Surgery. People Magazine's Oscar Power 2006 issue called Dr. Klein "The Go To Guy for Botox". Klein was Michael Jackson's dermatologist from 1985 onward, during which he diagnosed and treated Jackson for lupus and vitiligo, and worked to mitigate the effects of excessive plastic surgery. He also admonished Jackson about his use of propofol as a sleep aid.

Philanthropy

In the infancy of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Klein became one of the first doctors in Los Angeles to diagnose a case of Kaposi’s sarcoma in young patients. Ever since, he has been dedicated to seeking out the best possible care for his patients. In 1985, Dr. Arnold Klein along with one of his oldest and dearest friends Dame Elizabeth Taylor helped bring amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, into existence, in the living room of Klein’s home. Over the next two decades, they would both found other, allied organizations—the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and Klein’s Art for AIDS in Orange County—but their commitment to amfAR never wavered, and to this day both sit on its board. amfAR has invested more than $307-million in support of its mission. Additionally, Dr. Klein founded The Elizabeth Taylor Endowment for the UCLA CARE Center in 2007, a renowned facility for HIV/AIDS research and treatment. In the November 2008 issue of L'Uomo Vogue, in an article related to AIDS in Africa, it was reported that Dr. Klein and the organizations he founded have raised in excess of $274-million for HIV research and care. Dr. Klein serves as a trustee to various boards of directors. Some of which include the Jennifer Jones-Simon Foundation and The Hereditary Disease Foundation. Dr. Klein, alongside his old friend Frank Gehry, help the foundation to raise funds and awareness for inherited diseases. Dr. Klein also co-founded the Rose Tarlow-Arnold W. Klein Breast Cancer Foundation at UCLA which provides breast cancer treatment for individuals who are unable to afford it.
