Поэт, публицист, юрист. Он начал обучение на историко-филологическом факультете в Санкт-Петербургском университете, продолжил – на экономическом факультете Политехнического института в Лесном (Санкт-Петербург), закончил Русский юридический факультет в Праге. Эмигрировал из России. Печатался в журнале «Русская мысль», газетах «Возрождение» и «Руль». "Надорвавшись от непосильной работы железнодорожного «погрузчика», Алексей Гессен умер 10 июля 1925 года, ему только-только исполнилось 25 лет." Умер от туберкулеза.
