Работал плотогоном, в 1904 году, скопив денег, перебрался вместе с семьей из Витебска в Минск, где открыл лавку для торговли скобяными изделиями. Уже при Сов. власти, переехав в Москву и окончив курсы, стал самым грамотным наборщиком в газете “Известия”.
