И.Л. Парвус (Гельфанд) — участник российского и германского социал-демократического движения; философ, предприниматель и издатель. Родился в Белоруссии. В 1886 г. эмигрировал в Швейцарию. Окончил Базельский университет (1891) под именем Александр (Изральевич) Гельфанд; доктор философии. Один из руководителей (вместе с Л. Троцким) революции 1905-1907 гг. в Петербурге. Спонсировал переезд Ленина из Швейцарии в Петроград в 1917 г. С 1918 г. отошел от политической деятельности (Земан З.А., Шарлоу В.Б. Купец революции. Парвус-Гельфанд. Политическая биография. Кельн, 1964. На нем. яз.; в 1965 издана в Оксфорде на англ. яз. ).
