Выходец из Силезии. Высококвалифицированный механик. Социал-демократ, членом РСДРП с 1897 года. Все утверждали, что он еврей принявший католичество, а потом и православие. Сергей Есенин также свидетельствовал, что Райх - еврей. В 1907 году из-за его участия в революционных событиях, семья была выслана из Одессы и поселилась в Бендерах, где он устроился слесарем в желез-жные мастерские. Потом переехали в Орёл к старшей сестре жены, Варваре Ивановне Данцигер. После 1922 г. с женой переехал в Москву.
